Take a second long piece of paper. Twist the paper once and glue the ends together. Now you have made a Mobius band(带子). For people studying maths, this band is uncommon.

This strange band was first made in the 1800s by a German man namedAugust. Mobius. Mr. Mobius studied maths. He wanted to find a way to show how this band works with maths. Understand it or not, this band has only one surface. You can find this out for yourself.

If you draw a line on the surface of the paper before you twist and glue it, the line is only on one side of the paper. The paper has two surfaces. However, if you draw a line after you make the Mobius band, you can follow the line around all sides of the paper. In other words, the Mobius band must have only one surface.

It is also very interesting to see what happens when you cut the band. If you cut the Mobius band in half once down the line you drew, you do not get two Mobius bands. Instead, after you cut the band, it turns into one large twisted ring. Then, if you cut this ring in half along the middle of the band again, you get two connected(相连的)Mobius bands.

Summer is almost here, which means it is time to sign(报名) your children up for swim cl

asses again at the Community Pool. Classes begin on Monday, May 1, and will continue throughout the summer. Fifteen swim classes are being offered. Each class lasts ten hours. A new class starts each week of the summer. Each class costs $20. The pool is big enough for six students per class.

Classes will increase in difficulty each week. The first week is for children up to six years old. The last week is for advanced swimmers who want to improve their race and endurance skills.

Students can sign up for as many classes as they like, but they must pass the skills level test. For example, students who sign up for Level 4 (Stroke Readiness) must show their certificate(证书) for completing Level 3 or must demonstrate the front crawl and backstroke. Children cannot sign up for a level they are not ready for. Children who have never attended Community Pool classes must show up April 29 or 30 for a swim skills evaluation(评估). Swim classes are fun for all. Children learn new skills and make new friends. Parents get to meet other parents in the community. Swimming, like bicycling, is a healthy and valuable skill that, once learned, is never forgotten.

“It's a joy to teach young children,” said Ginger, the lead instructor for swimming programs. “More than half of them are terrified when we put them into the water the first time. Two months later, they're begging their parents to go to the pool every day.”

People born in the summer are more likely to be healthy than those who arrive during o

ther times of the year, new research suggests. The phenomenon could be caused by mothers getting more sun in pregnancy — and passing on higher quantities of vitamin D to their unborn infant. A study of almost half a million British adults found babies born in June, July, and August were heavier at birth and taller as adults. For the first time the research also revealed girls born in the summer started puberty later — an indication of better health in adult life. Early puberty in girls has been linked with a higher risk of diabetes, heart disease or breast cancer. Previous research has shown children born between June and October are likely to be slightly taller and have bigger bones than winter-born children — believed to be related to vitamin D exposure during pregnancy. Babies born in autumn and winter are more likely to develop food allergies — with sunlight exposure during pregnancy and vitamin D levels also thought to play a role in this. But being born in summer can have drawbacks - such as an increased risk of short-sightedness.
